Information about the Parliamentarians’ Forum on Renewable Energies, to be held in Bonn on 2 June 2004

From 1-4 June 2004, the Federal Government will host the International Conference for Renewable Energies in Bonn, as announced by Chancellor Gerhard Schröder at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in September 2002.

The Conference, which will be convened as an "extended intergovernmental conference", is intended for all states and relevant international organizations, as well as key private sector and civil society representatives and NGOs. The aim of the Conference is to bring fresh impetus to the global development of renewables.

Through its adoption of the motion set out in Printed Paper 15/807 (English), (French) at its 40th session on 10 April 2003, the German Bundestag voted to hold an international Parliamentarians’ Forum on the occasion of the Conference. This is intended to underline the fundamental legislative responsibility of parliaments for the establishment of appropriate legal conditions for renewables. The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and other organizations and associations will be involved in organizing the Forum. To prepare the event, the Bundestag has set up a working group chaired by Dr Hermann Scheer, MdB. As agreed between the working group and representatives of the Federal Government, the Parliamentarians’ Forum will take place on the second day of the Conference, i.e. on 2 June 2004. Speakers from every continent will have the opportunity to outline their experiences with renewable energies and present their initiatives. At the end of the debate, a final resolution will be adopted which will then be presented to the President of the main Conference.
