This prayer
room on the south side of the Plenary Chamber floor was designed by
artist Günther Uecker. With his sparing use of artistic and
architectural forms to express traditional theological themes, he
has succeeded in creating a room that encourages meditation and
inner reflection. And by installing in front of the windows a
partition wall that is open to the side, Ueker leads the light
indirectly into the room, giving it the mystical aura of an early
medieval crypt. The restrained design of the room also contains a
number of powerful sculptural elements.
