In 1986, the United Nations General Assembly designated the first Monday of October each year as World Habitat Day. On this day, emphasis is to be placed on the importance of sustainable shelter and human settlements development.
World Habitat Day 2008 was observed on 6 October. The global celebration was held in Luanda, Angola. Parallel to this central event, all member states were called upon to stage activities of their own on the occasion of World Habitat Day. The theme of World Habitat Day 2008 was "Harmonious Cities".
On the initiative of the President of the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat, Peter Götz, the Institute for Urban and Regional Planning of the Technical University of Berlin hosted a specialist conference. The basis for this conference was the comparative study "Implementing the Goals and Principles of the Habitat Agenda in the Legislation of the Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Romania and Turkey during the Period 1996-2005".
On 7 October 2008, the results of the specialist conference were presented on the premises of the German Bundestag.
