The 23rd session of the Governing Council of UN-HABITAT took place from 11 to 15 April 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya. In the Governing Council, policy objectives are developed and the Work Programme of UN-HABITAT is fixed for the next two years. The theme of the 23rd Governing Council was “Sustainable Urban Development through Expanding Equitable Access to Land, Housing, Basic Services and Infrastructure”.
Peter Götz, President of the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat (GPH), represented the international organization of parliamentarians at a high-profile panel on 13 April 2011 on the topic of housing. In his speech, Götz called for a closer cooperation between developed and less developed countries. He also encouraged the expansion of a study initiated by the GPH, which tracks the changes in legislation in Europe following the adoption of the Habitat Agenda in 1996 in Istanbul.
In addition, Götz represented the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat at a meeting of the partners of the World Urban Campaign on 12 April 2011. At the meeting, common positions were agreed on for the 23rd Governing Council.
In an interview with the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Dr. Joan Clos, Götz also discussed the future cooperation with the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat.
Finally, a General Assembly of the African Regional Council of the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat was held by President Margaret Zziwa within the framework of the 23rd Governing Council.
