Les 736 membres du Parlement européen (PE) représentent les citoyennes et les citoyens des 27 États membres de l’UE. La République fédérale d’Allemagne envoie 99 députés au PE. Les eurodéputés sont élus au suffrage universel direct pour un mandat de cinq ans. Conjointement avec le Conseil des ministres de l’Union européenne, le PE adopte des lois qui touchent directement ou indirectement à la vie des citoyennes et des citoyens. Depuis 2002, le double mandat de membre du PE et de député d’un parlement national n’est plus possible (toutefois, des dispositions transitoires s’appliquent à l’Irlande et à la Grande-Bretagne).
