About Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania was established in 1964, when Tanganyika and Zanzibar, hitherto separate independent countries, merged. On 25 April 1977 a permanent constitution for the United Republic came into force. In October 1979 the Revolutionary Council of Zanzibar adopted a separate constitution, governing Zanzibar's internal administration. A Bill to amend the United Republic's Constitution accordingly was tabled in January 1980. A new Constitution for Zanzibar, which came into force in January 1985, provided for direct elections to the Zanzibar Parliament.

Legislative power in Tanzania is exercised by the Parliament of the United Republic, which is vested by the Constitution with complete sovereign power, and of which the present National Assembly ist the legislative house. The Assembly also enacts all legislation concerning the mainland. Internal matters in Zanzibar and Pemba are the exclusive jurisdiction of the Zanzibar legislature, the House of Representatives or, in Swahili, Baraza la Wawakilishi.
