Members' allowances
To enable them to fulfil their mandate, Members receive a set of official allowances known as the Amtsausstattung, comprising monetary payments and benefits in kind for their offices, their staff and their travel requirements. In other words, Members of the Bundestag, like other people in employment, receive financial and material assistance for the performance of their duties. Besides the expense allowance, they are entitled to a furnished office, with telecommunications equipment installed, at the seat of the Bundestag for themselves and their staff; the floor space of this office accommodation currently amounts to 54 square metres per Member. Members of the Bundestag have access to official vehicles for travel within the city boundaries of Berlin. In addition, they have a pass that enables them to travel free of charge on the railways and are entitled to reimbursement of the cost of domestic flights taken in the exercise of their mandate.
