About the Netherlands

The Kingdom of the Netherlands comprises two overseas territories, Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles. They enjoy full autonomy in domestic and internal affairs. Defence and external affairs are a responsibility of the Netherlands. In economic affairs Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles form a cooperative union.

Legislative power in both Aruba and the Netherlands Antilles is held by a unicameral Parliament, the Staten. Executive power is vested in the Council of Ministers led by the Prime Minister and responsible to the Staten. A Governor, appointed by the Dutch Crown, represents the monarch of the Netherlands in the territories and holds responsibility for external affairs and defence, which he exercises in cooperation with the Council of Ministers.
