Specialists in the language of the law
Legislative texts must be unambiguous, comply with all legal requirements and accord with the constitution. In the German Bundestag, these standards are maintained by those who know the language of the law best – the members of the Committee on Legal Affairs, many of whom studied law. They are asked to give their opinion on numerous pieces of draft legislation. In other fields, the Committee is responsible for bills relating, for example, to civil law, criminal law, business law and procedural law. The Committee also keeps track of the judgements delivered by Germany’s highest judicial body, the Federal Constitutional Court, and recommends that Parliament issue a statement regarding certain procedures.
